Coleman is a Lancashire native. Coleman attended Arnold School in Blackpool where she was the head girl. She also scored straight A's in her A-levels. Coleman received two nominations in the year 2007. The British Soap Awards she was nominated as Best Newcomer and at the National Television Awards she was awarded the title of Most Popular Newcomer. In 2009, the British Soap Awards 2009 nominated her in both category of Best Actress - Sexiest Feminine and the category for Best Dramatic Performance. Coleman was nominated for Best Actress at the TV Choice Awards. On the 21st March, 2012 Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat announced at a press event that Coleman was set to as the Doctor's companion along with Matt Smith after Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have left the show. Moffat picked her for the role due to her ability to work together with Smith as well as the fact that she spoke faster than him.
